Water pumps are a vital part of any pond and selecting the correct water pump will determine whether the pond is successful or not.
At Utopia Koi we have evaluated the market place and chosen a select range of water circulation pumps we believe offer superior energy efficiency which is of paramount importance with soaring energy costs, durability and reliability.
There are three variations of water pump. Submersible, dry surface pumps and dual purpose pumps.
Submersible pumps are pumps that are designed to be completely submerged under water. They come with a full pump cage to allow the pump to draw water from the pond without sucking in debris over a certain size.
Submersible pumps in general are placed on the floor of the pond when a bottom drain has not been utilised during the pond build. The pump, pumps water from the pond to your chosen filter and is then returned to the pond. The would be termed a pump fed system.
Dry surface pumps are designed to be installed in a clean dry area and can not be submerged or installed outside. This type of pump is generally more specialised and installed within a filter room.
Dry surfaces pumps are designed to work in conjunction with a bottom drain on a gravity fed system. Water is drawn through the bottom drain via gravity into the filtration system and is then pumped back to the pond.
Dual purpose pumps are pumps that can be submerged or installed in a dry surface environment. This covers the vast majority of pumps on the market and they offer a very flexible installation.
Generally dual purpose pumps wont have a full cage but rather an impeller cage covering only the part of the pump that sucks the water from the pond. Most dual purpose pumps aren’t actually used submerged but used in a dry surface installation in conjunction with bottom drains but are installed outside so subjected to the weather. Because of this dual purpose pumps are water proof.
Selecting the correct pump is vital to the success of your pond. There are certain pieces of information you require you to enable this:
- What is the water volume of my pond?
- How fast do I want to turn over the water in my pond?
- What head hight do I require?
- Do I require a high pressure pump?
At Utopia Koi we aim to make selecting a water circulation pump as easy as possible so lets answer the four basic questions.
