Air-source heat pumps are undoubtedly the most economical way to heat a Koi pond hands down. Nothing else comes close.

So you may be asking. “How on earth do air-source heat-pumps work and with some scepticism? Your probably thinking its impossible to extract heat from air at minus 15 degrees”.

We’ll do our best to keep it simple and sketch over some intricacies with the aim of giving you the gist.

Air at any temperature above absolute zero contains some energy. An air-source heat pump transfers (‘pumps’) some of this energy as heat from one place to another, for example between the outside air to the water within a Koi pond.

An air-source heat-pump can be designed to transfer heat in either direction, to heat the pond water or to cool the the pond.

The technology is similar to a refrigerator or freezer or air conditioning unit. The different effect is due to the physical location of the different system components. Just as the pipes on the back of a refrigerator become warm as the interior cools, so an ASHP warms the water of a Koi pond whilst cooling the expelled outside air.

The main components of an air-source heat pump are:

  • An outdoor heat exchanger coil, which extracts heat from ambient air.
  • An inboard heat exchanger coil, which transfers the heat into the water pumped through the air-source heat-pump via your water circulation pump. hot air ducts, an indoor heating system.

Air source heat pumps provide extremely low cost water heating. A high efficiency heat pump can provide up to thirteen times as much heat as an electric heater using the same energy.

Efficient air-source heat-pumps can extract heat from ambient air down to about ?15 °C (5 °F). At colder outdoor temperatures the heat pump is less efficient but as technology advances which it has at a pace over the last few years air-source heat-pumps are becoming the go to heater for heating a Koi pond.

Not all air-source heat-pumps are the same and you do get what you pay for with this technology.

    The Thermotec Inverter range of air-source heat pumps are the most advanced heat pumps for sale by Utopia Koi. They offer the latest energy saving technology and are fully inverter driven. This means that they automatically adjust the speed of the fan and compressor to precisely match the heat demand from the pond.

    The ability to adjust the output of the heat pump allows the Thermotec Inverter to deliver greatly reduced running costs with Coefficients of Performance (COP) of up to 13. This means that for every 1 kWh of electricity used by the heat pump, 13 kWh of heat is delivered to the pond. This delivers reduced running costs compared with other heat pumps on the market.

    Inverter technology has a reduced electrical startup requirement, making them ideal for properties with a sensitive or limited electrical supplies.

    The Thermotec Inverter is capable of connecting to the internet via the optional WIFI module. This superb feature allows you to control the air-source heat pump via any internet browser or via a free downloadable app for your smart phone.     The Duratech Dura + range of air-source heat pumps commands a slightly higher price than some other heat pumps available but Dura+ heat-pumps are renowned as a quality product and in our opinion out perform many other less expensive air-source heat pumps available.

    Dura+ heat-pumps offer greater energy efficiency and superior reliability. Like all things in life you usually get what you pay for and the Dura + units have been used by Utopia Koi on our own ponds for years with excellent results.

    As an option it is possible to add a heated drip tray heater kit reducing ice build up in the drip tray. This is an excellent feature that saves time and effort durning the winter months. Dura+ heat pumps come as standard with an automated hot gas defrost but not all heat pumps have the option to add a heated drip tray.

    A heated drip tray ensures that the waste water created from the unit defrosting and indeed the water produced through the process of condensing during normal operation of the air-source heat pump does not freeze though cold weather conditions as it drains away to waste from the drip tray. In our opinion an added option that is without a doubt worth purchasing.

    Crystal Enterprise air-source heat pumps are a well made, reliable units and are ideally suited for the customer that desires exceptional value for money.

    The units are supplied with titanium heat exchangers, digital control panels as well as a hot gas defrost enabling the unit to be used all year round down to ambient temperatures of -15 degrees.

    It is possible to add the automatic heat to cool module so that the air-source heat pump can be set to hold a water temperature within a tolerance. This is a superb feature allowing you to set the desired pond water temperature knowing it will remain constant.
