Koi Pond Aeration

In order to have a healthy eco environment in your pond you need four elements working in harmony with one another. Biological filtration, adequate water circulation, enough water volume for you fish stocking density and last but not least a source of water aeration. Koi and the beneficial bacteria in your filtration system need oxygen.

How do I add air to my Koi pond?

There are many ways to add air to your pond water. Directly into the biological filtration system as close as possible to the beneficial bacteria. A moving bed filter system such as the Nexus Eazy filters are excellent examples that perform this process very well. Aerated bottom drains are another way to add aeration in a very neat and tidy way to your pond without unsightly air hose being visible.

Last but not least Bakki showers or trickle towers are a fantastic way to degas the pond water of total devolved solids and at the same time add copious amounts of oxygen to your pond water. Usually a modern Koi pond mixes multiple methods of aeration to create the best possible water conditions allowing your Koi to thrive.

In general 40 litres of air per 1000 UK gallons is a sensible level to work towards whilst calculating the size of an air pump.

We recommend adding as much air to your pond as you can using air pumps and air stones to distribute the air evenly through the pond water. Don’t forget a pond is a living eco system and the amount of oxygen water can hold at saturation alters depending on water temperature, atmospheric pressure and water salinity but to keep things simple. Water can hold less oxygen as it becomes warmer. Respiration of you Koi increase with warmer water, so more oxygen is needed.
